During her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted the most recent progress on economic inequality in Mexico, which she attributed to the policies of the Morena administrations. This progress was announced after a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump regarding the issue of tariffs.

From the National Palace, the president reported on the results achieved after speaking with the US president about the negotiations for the possible imposition of tariffs on Mexican products starting August 1. As a result, she announced that Mexico had obtained a 90-day extension to continue talks with the neighboring country.

In this context, the president stated that the strategy of acting in accordance with its principles and maintaining a cool head had been effective. She also explained that actions such as reducing the deficit and promoting key investments were proposed, with the intention of ensuring advantages for Mexico and preserving the respect agreement between the two nations.

Mexico boasts reduction in economic inequality

In front of the media, Sheinbaum Pardo shared her position on the results of the national survey on Household Income and Expenditure, recently published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), which released the most relevant data from the study.

On July 30, the institution presented a report with the most recent results, in which it indicated that in 2024, the average total household income reached 27,307 pesos per month. Of that figure, 25,955 pesos corresponded to current income and 1,352 pesos to financial and capital income.

In addition, she noted that the average current household income increased by 10.6% compared to 2022, and from 2018 to 2024, it increased by 15%. The sustained increase in income has continued since 2020, a year in which the negative trend observed since 2016 was reversed.

The president emphasized that these results go beyond being good news, as they are added to the data on economic growth of 0.7% in a complex international context. She also mentioned the revision of the International Monetary Fund’s forecast, which went from negative to positive.

The information reinforces the momentum of the policy implemented in Plan Mexico and highlights the management of the current government and the contribution of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the Fourth Transformation process.

“Mexico was the most unequal country in the world. With six years of policy changes to the economic model, wage increases, and welfare programs that have led to a reduction in inequalities,” she noted.

As part of this, Sheinbaum criticized the fact that, during Felipe Calderón’s administration, economic inequality was 35 times greater, while currently it is 14 times greater. She acknowledged that the decrease was a result of the transformation policies implemented in the economic model, which represents a significant advance for Mexico.
