Tulum registers 40% hotel occupancy during the summer; the lowest in 10 years

The current summer season is not generating the desired visitor levels in the 11 destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, but Tulum is a special case, averaging 40% occupancy.

It is already the worst summer season in the last 10 years due to sargassum and a critical drop in occupancy on flights to Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport.

A civil organization calls for the demolition of illegal condominiums in Tulum.

This was announced by Jorge Portillo Mánica, seventh councilor of the Tulum city council, who stated that the city’s first district barely reaches 15% occupancy.

“It’s not a game, nor a gridiron, nor a matter of political parties; Tulum is experiencing its worst tourism crisis, and sargassum is compounded by the worst tourist season in history.” “The situation is pitiful, it’s horrible,” he said.

The councilor of the Citizens’ Movement stated that “there are hotels with one or two rooms occupied, something that hasn’t happened in a long time.”

He announced that airlines have already announced they will stop flying to Tulum due to the low profitability of flights, and warned that if nothing is done to stem this decline, the situation will only worsen in the short and medium term.

At the beginning of the year, Copa, Avianca, and Alaska Airlines announced the cancellation of flights.

As a measure to try to reverse the low influx of tourists, the councilor led a press conference to announce the Aura Music Fest, to be held on August 14, 15, and 16. It will include music, gastronomy, fashion, and Mayan culture, with the support of local authorities, business leaders, and Visit Mexico.

Portillo Mánica considered that the crisis in Tulum requires an emergency plan from all three levels of government. Therefore, he will arrange a meeting with Governor Mara Lezama, the Ministry of the Interior, and even with President Claudia Sheinbaum, to explain the critical situation in Tulum.
