The third edition of the 2025 Lobster Festival will take place on August 15, 16, and 17. This event seeks to recognize the importance of the Caribbean spiny lobster as one of the main fisheries for the coastal communities of Quintana Roo and promote sustainable fishing practices.
The celebration will begin on August 15 in Tulum and continue on August 16 and 17 in Punta Allen, with the participation of fishermen from the Vigía Chico Fisheries Production Cooperative Society (SCPP), who for nearly six decades have brought this marine resource “from sea to table.”
The festival is jointly organized by the Tulum City Council, the Friends of Sian Ka’an Association, the European Union in Mexico, Slow Food International, and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative is part of the efforts of the Kuxatur Maya Ka’an program, which promotes sustainable development, climate change adaptation, and responsible consumption in the region.
In addition to informative activities on lobster traceability and responsible fishing techniques, the program includes a gastronomic competition in which renowned chefs will evaluate dishes prepared by local cooks, offering attendees a taste of the culinary richness of the Mexican Caribbean.
The Caribbean spiny lobster, classified as a Slow Food Presidium product, is caught using artisanal methods that respect reproductive cycles and minimum sizes, which allows for the conservation of the species and the maintenance of the local economy.
The organizers invited the public and visitors to attend to learn more about this marine resource, mingle with the fishermen, and enjoy traditional cuisine. The full program of activities will be announced soon.
