President Claudia Sheinbaum reportedly had her first “breakup” with her predecessor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
According to a column by journalist Raymundo Riva Palacio published in El Financiero, two recent scandals involving prominent Morena figures reveal a growing distance between the current president and the Tabasco politician.
- The Hernán Bermúdez Case and the Tepid Defense of Adán Augusto
The ties of former Tabasco Security Secretary Hernán Bermúdez Requena to the criminal group “La Barredora” implicated Morena’s senatorial coordinator, Adán Augusto López, as he was the one who appointed the former police officer to his government when he came to power in the state.
The relationship between Requena and López Hernández caused unrest within the Morena party, leading to a campaign orchestrated by the presidential advisors coordinator, Jesús Ramírez, reportedly launching a campaign from the National Palace to expose the former governor of Tabasco, according to Riva Palacio.
The attacks against Adán Augusto are believed to be the first sign of a “rupture” between Sheinbaum and López Obrador, as he is a figure close to the former president.
In this context, sources from Político MX have reported that Senator Raúl Morón is holding meetings at the National Palace to become Adán Augusto’s replacement within the Morena party’s coordination in the Senate.
The column also mentions Claudia Sheinbaum’s lukewarm defense of Adán Augusto.
“Without much enthusiasm, she has come out to support him and to say that there is no investigation against him. She hasn’t said he’s innocent, it should be emphasized, only that they haven’t opened an investigation file against him,” the article states.
- Leaks of Morena’s luxurious vacations
Another situation that demonstrates a distancing between Sheinbaum and AMLO is the leak of photographs showing Morena supporters enjoying their vacations outside the country.
The trips of “Andy” López Beltrán to Tokyo, Japan; Ricardo Monreal to Madrid, Spain; and Mario Delgado to Portugal all came to light in the same time window, although they occurred at different times.
This situation fueled rumors about the possibility that the leaks were part of an “inside job” by Sheinbaum’s administration, with the alleged intention of sending a message regarding the failure to comply with the austerity policies that López Obrador preached so much during his administration and that are now part of Morena’s ethical and political principles.
“The photographs weren’t taken on the streets or in open spaces. They were taken inside hotels, which allowed the press to review their prices, star ratings, and categories. They were all staying in the best hotels in the cities where they were vacationing,” Riva Palacio elaborates in the column.
Coincidentally, the three figures are from the core of Obradorism, who received a call from Sheinbaum.

“Power is exercised with humility (…) People have the right to visit one country or another. But we have a political responsibility, and a responsibility that has to do with the movement we represent, and the principles we stand for. We all have to—when we are holding public office—conduct ourselves appropriately,” the head of the Federal Executive explained.
The most direct rebuke came to ‘Andy’ López Beltrán, Morena’s secretary of organization and López Obrador’s son, seen by many political analysts as the heir to power within the movement.
