Rainy season in Mexico: When will it end?

278

2025 has brought one of the heaviest rainy seasons in decades, with historical records such as August 10th, the wettest day in Mexico City since 1952.

Experts from the National Meteorological Service point out that various phenomena, such as El Niño and the formation of cyclones, could extend the period of rainfall until the end of November.

When does the rainy season end?

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) noted that intense rainfall usually coincides with the most active period of cyclone formation in the Pacific and Atlantic.

The rainy season in Mexico officially runs from May to October, but in 2025, projections indicate that rainfall will extend until the end of November. This means an extra month of rainfall compared to the annual average, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in some regions.

In 2025, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), cyclones are expected to play a significant role in maintaining rainfall longer than usual, so the end-of-season forecast has been moved to November 30.

Although the rainy season officially ends in November, meteorologists warn that isolated episodes of rain could occur after that date, driven by cold fronts or atypical events.

An atypical year due to El Niño and tropical systems

Although August normally marks a slight decrease in rainfall intensity in Mexico City, this year the weather conditions are unusual.

Experts from the SMN and other organizations point out that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, coupled with the presence of several developing tropical systems, has caused the rain cycle to remain more active than usual.

Specialists recommend that the population maintain preventive measures throughout September, October, and November, since although the intensity could decrease toward the end of August, September tends to be a month with frequent rains due to the proximity of tropical cyclone season.
