The binational ferry that will connect Ensenada with San Diego is already in Mexican waters, and its arrival marks a historic moment for cross-border mobility and maritime transportation in the region. The vessel traveled from Seattle to the Port of Ensenada, where it is currently stationed and undergoing inspection to prepare for commercial operation.
The vessel has capacity for 330 passengers and will be transferred to Ensenada to begin local operations. The Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) awarded the project concession to Azteca Ferries, which will invest 100% privately in the operation of this new international maritime route.
Although the exact start date has not yet been confirmed, state authorities indicated that the concessionaire will determine when the crossings will begin. Furthermore, it is estimated that the one-way ticket will cost between $50 and $60 USD, including port fees. In fact, Ensenada Mayor Claudia Agatón confirmed that they already have two wedding dates booked in September 2026.
Azteca Ferries is the transportation company that will offer these trips, both one-way and round-trip, to explore both cities. Among the most important aspects, the company clarifies that each traveler is responsible for complying with the necessary immigration procedures, and therefore recommends checking requirements before traveling, as it will not be responsible for any issues with customs or immigration.
Regarding reservations and changes, passengers can change the date, time, or name on the ticket, although these adjustments will be subject to availability and possible additional fees. In the event of overbooking, the company must refund the full cost of the ticket.
In addition to its capacity for 330 passengers, the roll-on/roll-off ferry will offer trips of approximately 2–2.5 hours between San Diego and Ensenada, covering a distance of approximately 111 km.
Azteca Ferries has already published tentative schedules on its website, which include two daily trips:
San Diego → Ensenada: 11:30–2:30 and 7:00–9:30
Ensenada → San Diego: 7:00–9:30 and 3:00–5:30
The ferry will feature onboard amenities such as air conditioning, outdoor areas, Wi-Fi, a cafeteria, and restrooms. Service pets will be allowed, and accessibility will be available for people with disabilities.
