Recently, residents of Yucatán were warned about a red tide, and this information was released through a press release. Therefore, we will provide you with all the details so you can take the appropriate precautions.
According to authorities, the evolution of the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) on the Yucatán coast has been monitored. On August 9, tests were conducted along the coastline and offshore, where higher-than-established concentrations were found.
Is the red tide a risk to the population?
Laboratory studies showed elevated concentrations of the toxic microalgae Prorocentrum lima and Pyrodinium, which pose a risk to the health of residents. Furthermore, it was detailed that they were located on the coastal strip between Progreso and Celestún.
Based on the experts’ findings, the Inter-Institutional Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of Red Tide 2025 reached the following conclusions:
Unanimously declare a Red Tide event in the coastal region from Progreso to Celestún.
Establish, as a preventative measure, a general sanitary ban on all marine species in this area, applicable to coastal fishing (up to 40 kilometers offshore).
Maintain sanitary surveillance through continuous marine sampling.
Reiterate preventive recommendations, such as avoiding swimming in the sea due to possible skin, eye, or respiratory irritation, especially in children.
Urge the public not to collect marine species that wash up on the beach.
Hold ongoing sessions for the duration of the contingency.
Invite the public to follow the instructions of the brigades formed by Procivy, SSP, SSY, Semar, and the municipal governments on the beaches of Yucatán.
Finally, the Government of Yucatán expressed its commitment to the well-being of the state’s residents, stating that it will continue working to address this emergency in the best possible way.
