Rain will continue over the Yucatán Peninsula in the coming days due to the interaction of a low-pressure area in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and an upper-level trough moving over the southeast of the country, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN) and Civil Protection of Quintana Roo.
The low-pressure area, located 275 kilometers east of Puerto Altamira, Tamaulipas, has increased its probability of cyclonic development to 50% in 48 hours and could evolve into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours. Although its center is far from the peninsula, it favors the entry of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
This phenomenon is compounded by a trough in the upper atmosphere, which, when interacting with warm, humid air, will generate heavy to very heavy rains in Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, with accumulations of 50 to 75 millimeters.
The rainfall will be accompanied by thunderstorms, wind gusts of 40 to 60 km/h (25 to 37 mph), and possible hail, conditions that could cause local flooding, puddles, and reduced road visibility.
Civil Protection urged the public to heed official warnings and take precautions, especially in areas with a history of waterlogging or heavy rains.
