Fernando Chico Pardo, 73, the main shareholder of Asur, which includes the Cancún airport, is one step away from acquiring 50% of Banamex in two phases. Citi would then be sold, and Carlos Slim Helú, who was Carlos Slim Helú’s banker at Imbursa for many years, would crown his business career. He had previously attempted to acquire Banorte in 2012 through negotiations with Carlos Hank Rhon.
Fernando Chico Pardo now plans to purchase 25% of Banamex’s capital before the end of 2025 for an amount that would range between $1.5 billion and $1.7 billion, according to Heraldo. Later, within a year at the latest, he would acquire another 25% with the addition of more partners, primarily Mexicans.
This is because Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration imposed on Citi that in order to sell what was once the largest bank and is now ranked eighth, it must remain in Mexican hands. With 50% of the capital controlled by Mexican investors, the third step would be to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in late 2026 or even early 2027, to definitively exit Citi.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), the airport terminal manager with operations in Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire the entirety of URW Airports, a subsidiary of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, in a transaction valued at $295 million.
