A couple disembarks from a plane traveling to Puerto Vallarta to applause from passengers.

The Puerto Vallarta–Toluca flight of the low-cost Mexican airline didn’t start as most passengers expected. Everything was proceeding normally until the captain interrupted the silence with a loud and clear message: he asked two passengers exhibiting unacceptable behavior to leave the aircraft of their own volition. Some passengers thought it was just a delay, but others had already witnessed the escalating situation, which became a spectacle that was recorded and shared on social media.

The problem began long before takeoff. According to passengers who recorded the moment, the couple arrived late for boarding and still tried to board with additional bags they hadn’t paid for. Not only did they forcefully load them into already occupied compartments, they also pushed staff and slammed compartment doors that wouldn’t close. Tensions escalated immediately, and with time running out, the crew requested the intervention of the National Guard.

The captain, in a calm but firm tone, explained over the loudspeaker that the passengers were disruptive and that they should leave the plane out of respect for others. He pointed out that they were in a federal zone and that if they didn’t do so voluntarily, they risked facing additional charges. His words were captured in a video that soon went viral and ended with applause when the couple finally got off.

The woman got off later, followed by the man who was filming with his cell phone as if looking for evidence to defend himself later. Before leaving, he opened some compartments to look for his bags, but was informed that they had already been removed. After several tense minutes, the atmosphere immediately changed as passengers celebrated with applause and comments of relief that the flight would finally continue.

The original video, about the incident with the Viva Aerobús airline, posted by a user identified as Ventura and replicated by the digital creator Chepetín Esqueda, generated mixed reactions. Some saw it as a necessary act to maintain safety, while others criticized the airline for allegedly abusing the restrictions of its lowest fare. What happened wasn’t just a one-hour delay, but also sparked a broader debate online.

Opinions were divided into two camps: those who think the rules are clear and should be respected, and those who believe low-cost airlines are playing with the fine print to get more money. The so-called Zero Fare, which was the one purchased by passengers, only allows travel with a small personal item, such as a backpack or bag. Any extra bag must be paid for, whether in the cabin or checked.

Here’s an important point: rules can vary from airline to airline. Although Mexico’s Civil Aviation Law allows for one carry-on bag, each company defines specific measurements and weights, which can sometimes confuse travelers. Therefore, it’s not enough to assume they all operate the same. It’s a good idea to read the terms and conditions carefully before purchasing your ticket to avoid surprises at the counter or gate.

A useful tip is to compare fares and not be swayed solely by the lowest price. Often, what seems cheap ends up being expensive when you add fees for baggage, seat selection, or even boarding pass printing. The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) recommends getting informed and, if you feel your rights have been violated, filing a formal complaint without resorting to aggressive behavior.
