On the night of Tuesday, August 26, a tragic accident in the municipality of Otáez claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy. The motorcycle he was riding with his 16-year-old brother was swept away by the current in the San Marcos ravine.

While the boy’s body has been found, the search for his brother continues unabated.

The State Civil Protection Coordination immediately activated an air and ground rescue operation.

With the support of a helicopter and drones, teams are exploring hard-to-reach areas, while residents of the nearby communities of San Marcos, Cieneguita, Banome, and Zapotes are searching the banks of the stream.

Despite these efforts, the maneuvers have become complex due to the geography of the area, which includes a deep ravine, dense vegetation, and challenging geological composition.

Search for a second youth continues

The body of the 14-year-old boy has been located and recovered. However, the search for the 16-year-old boy, the victim’s brother, is ongoing.

In a statement, the state agency emphasized the importance of caution during the rainy season. The statement concludes with a call to the public not to risk crossing rivers or streams with swollen currents, as these can sweep away vehicles and put lives in serious danger.

The Civil Protection Coordination stated that prevention is the best tool to avoid this type of tragedy and pledged to continue working to locate the young man and provide the necessary support to the family in this time of grief.

La Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil activó de inmediato un operativo de rescate por aire y tierra.
