The National Seismological Service (SSN) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) reported three earthquakes in the state of Chiapas between the night of Saturday, August 30th, and the morning of Sunday, August 31st.

The magnitudes ranged between 4.1 and 4.4, with no material damage or casualties reported so far.

This is the most recent seismic activity in Mexico

The most recent event occurred this Sunday, August 31st, at 7:02 a.m., with a magnitude of 4.1. The epicenter was located 65 kilometers northwest of Cintalapa, at a depth of 155 kilometers. Due to the depth of the earthquake, surface perception was limited.

Hours earlier, during the early hours of the same Sunday, the SSN reported a magnitude 4.1 earthquake, recorded at 12:02 a.m. The epicenter was located 80 kilometers south of Ciudad Hidalgo, on the Chiapas coast, at a depth of 55 kilometers.

The series began on the night of Saturday, August 30, at 9:14 p.m., with a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, the strongest of the three. The epicenter was located 56 kilometers northwest of Cintalapa, at a depth of 146 kilometers.

At the time of publication of this article, Civil Protection authorities had not reported any damage to infrastructure or the population.

However, they noted that Chiapas is one of the states with the highest seismic activity in the country, and therefore emphasized the importance of citizens maintaining preventive measures and a family protection plan in case of emergencies.

The seismic activity in Chiapas is mainly due to the interaction of the Cocos Plate with the North American Plate, which generates constant activity in the region.
