Holiday season leaves 72 tons of trash on Cozumel beaches

During the recent vacation season, public beaches in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, saw a significant increase in waste, accumulating approximately 72 tons of garbage in one month, reported Russel Cohuo Huitz, head of the Department of Parks, Gardens, and Public Areas.

The official explained that two tons were collected daily during the week and four tons on weekends, especially on the beaches most frequented by locals and visitors, such as Playa Mía.

He noted that one of the main challenges is the lack of civic culture and the limited number of trash receptacles, although he acknowledged the collaboration of waste collectors and the donation of containers by cruise lines to improve collection.
