The island of Cozumel experienced a night of fury, violence, and looting this Saturday after an alleged sexual abuse of a 9-year-old girl by a soldier escalated.
According to circulating reports, the girl was allegedly a street vendor and was allegedly taken to the Sedena housing complex by a soldier who attempted to abuse her.
Therefore, hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the Military Garrison and the Cozumel housing complex, located on Rafael E. Melgar Boulevard, to demand justice and that the Sedena hand over the alleged rapist.
During the demonstration, there were heated moments, when protesters began throwing rocks at the Military Garrison and smashed the windows of the watchtower. In response, security guards fired shots in the air to dissuade the protesters.
The situation then began to spiral out of control when some young people threw fuel and then lit it inside the security booths.
Without any response from the Sedena (National Guard), people went to the institution’s store located on Rafael E. Melgar Boulevard and 11th Street and looted it.
In response, the soldiers opened fire to discourage the people from continuing the looting.
Later, the protesters went to the State Attorney General’s Office, where they also threw rocks at the glass entrance door after receiving no response from any authorities.
The State Attorney General’s Office has already arrested Jairo N, the soldier accused of the abuse.

“DON’T LEAVE CHILDREN ALONE”
.
After two hours of chaos, the mayor of Cozumel, José Luis Chacón, a Morena member of the party, appeared before the media. His main position was that children should not be left alone on the streets, to prevent them from being abused.
.
“You can’t leave a girl alone, you can’t leave a minor alone, especially on a Saturday night when, unfortunately, people have had their fill,” he said.
“People are coming and going, and seeing a girl alone on the street is not right, no matter how much need they have,” he added.
.
In that sense, he asked society not to buy anything from minors who sell on the streets, to prevent their parents from sending them to sell.
