Durango is experiencing a historic moment. After more than seven decades of waiting, the construction of the El Tunal II Dam has ceased to be a dream and has become a reality. Under the leadership of Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal, in his third year in office, a giant is emerging that ensures the future with water, development, and well-being for families.
The project will have the capacity to supply drinking water to more than 300,000 people, with a guaranteed supply for at least five decades, in addition to strengthening the agricultural and industrial sectors. Its design will allow the use of 50 million cubic meters annually for urban consumption, operate as a storage dam, and reduce flood risks in agricultural and urban areas.
The comprehensive project includes the dam, the “Guadalupe Victoria” water treatment plant (second phase), a pumping plant, pressure and gravity aqueducts, and complementary works. It represents an estimated investment of 4.56 billion pesos and will be one of the most important infrastructure projects in the state’s history.
The schedule establishes that proposals will be received on August 29, the decision will be made on September 8, and construction will begin on September 12, 2025, with completion in December 2027.
“We build legacies, we build a destiny. From here, Durango’s new history is written; here, a new chapter is born. Thus, a Giant is born,” stated Governor Esteban Villegas during the announcement of the project, emphasizing that this project is a symbol of unity, vision, and greatness for all the people of Durango.
