The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFREPIS) recently issued a counterfeit alert for the product KitosCell LP®, 600 mg (Pirfenidone), extended-release tablets.
The risk alert was issued based on a technical and documentary analysis of the information submitted by Grupo Medifarma, S.A. de C.V., holder of the sanitary registration, which indicated a series of irregularities.
This popular kitchen item has been ordered to be withdrawn from all supermarkets nationwide due to accidental indigestion and possible suffocation.

What irregularities did Cofepris detect?
COFEPRIS recently announced that the product KitosCell LP®, 600 mg (Pirfenidone), extended-release tablets with lot number 23JB019 and expiration date SEP 26, is not recognized by the company because it does not comply with the original product markings. It also identified it as being sold on the informal market.
At the same time, it focused on the sale of medications on public roads, as this poses a serious risk to the population’s health, given that their origin does not correspond to the authorized owners, manufacturers, or distributors.
Along these lines, by not knowing the origin of the raw materials, manufacturing, storage, and transportation conditions, their safety, efficacy, and quality are not guaranteed.
For this reason, purchasing medications sold in these locations could cause or worsen illnesses, cause side effects, adverse reactions, or even death.
What types of diseases is Pirfenidone used for?
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, pirfenidone is used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs of unknown cause).
Pirfenidone belongs to a class of medications called pyridones. It works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the body that is implicated in causing fibrosis.
