At least 15 people died this Saturday in an accident involving three vehicles on a highway connecting the cities of Mérida and Campeche in southeastern Mexico, local authorities reported.

The accident occurred after a cargo truck overturned, hitting a compact vehicle and a van transporting construction workers, the Yucatán Security Secretariat reported on its social media.

“Fifteen people were confirmed dead at the scene” and two injured, the report stated, adding that the truck driver was among the deceased.

After the collision, the van, which was operating as public transportation, was engulfed in flames and lying across the road, as seen in local press images.

This is the third vehicle accident with numerous fatalities reported in Mexico in less than a week.

Last Monday, 10 people died and 41 were injured after a freight train struck a double-decker passenger bus in the central state of Mexico.

Last Wednesday, a truck loaded with nearly 50,000 liters of gas exploded at a busy intersection, unleashing a massive blaze that, as of Saturday, had left at least 13 dead and dozens with serious burns.
