Mexican security forces and armed forces seized 1.5 tons of methamphetamine hidden in the false bottom of a tractor-trailer on Monday, following a joint operation in the port of Mazatlán, in northwestern Mexico.

The operation in the northern state of Sinaloa was carried out by the Ministry of the Navy, the Ministry of National Defense, the National Guard, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, according to a joint official statement.

According to official estimates, the economic impact on criminal organizations amounts to 426.5 million pesos (approximately $21.32 million), in addition to preventing more than 1.5 million doses from reaching the public.

The substance was detected during an inspection conducted by members of the Mazatlán Naval Port Protection Unit, assisted by an X-ray machine and three canine units.

According to the official report, an inspection of the vehicle attached to a box revealed a compartment with a double bottom containing 494 packages and six bags containing a substance with characteristics of methamphetamine, weighing approximately 1.5 tons.

The tractor-trailer and cargo were placed at the disposal of the federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, who will compile the investigation file to determine responsibility and the probable connection between the seizure and organized crime networks.

No information was provided on the number of people detained at the inspection point or the previous route or destination of the shipment, which was immobilized at the port for disposal.

“With these actions, the institutions of the Security Cabinet reaffirm their commitment to working in a coordinated manner to prevent illicit substances from reaching the streets,” they stated.
