Construction of the first section of the Querétaro-Irapuato Passenger Train began this morning with the groundbreaking of the 30.3-kilometer construction project that will connect Querétaro with the Apaseo el Grande station.

Upon signaling the start of the project, the head of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, Andrés Lajous, said that this project will directly benefit nearly 2 million people with modern, safe, and efficient transportation.

The train, the federal official stated, will have an initial capacity to transport 30,000 people daily on this section alone. “The train promises to transform the lives of residents and travelers in the region.”

The project not only seeks to reduce travel times but will also boost the local economy through the creation of 1,518 direct jobs and 8,255 indirect jobs, boosting the workforce and supply chains.

This inaugural section is just the beginning, as the line is expected to extend to Irapuato, with future stations in Celaya, Cortázar, Salamanca, and Irapuato.

Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo expressed her enthusiasm for the start of the planning phase of the railway project that will connect the Bajío region. The state governor emphasized that this project seeks to improve citizen mobility and connect Guanajuato with neighboring states, strengthening connectivity and regional development.

García Muñoz Ledo highlighted Guanajuato’s railway tradition, which dates back to 1877, and underscored the positive impact that trains have on communities: “development, progress, well-being, and, above all, this connection between families that fills us with so much emotion,” she stated.

The new train, which will pass through Irapuato, Querétaro, and León, will help spur development in the region. The governor highlighted the project as an emblem of collaboration, teamwork, and a strategic vision for the future.

For his part, the governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri González, emphasized the importance of the rail connectivity project, noting that it will boost competitiveness and development in his state. During his speech, Kuri González mentioned the Querétaro residents’ longing for a train connecting their state for over 46 years.

The governor emphasized that this new connection, which will benefit the western region of the country and the large industrial corridor shared by Guanajuato and Querétaro, will greatly contribute to the state’s competitiveness.
