Hotel occupancy in the Riviera Maya plummeted to 44% in early September. According to the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), as of last month’s figures, September 9, the destination reached this level with 58,035 available hotel rooms, and only 26,087 rooms were occupied, less than half of capacity.

The Riviera Maya saw the decline primarily at all-inclusive resorts located in Playa del Carmen. Furthermore, it surpassed last year’s record for lowest hotel occupancy, which reached 47% on October 2, 2024, but with 57,108 rooms available—927 fewer units.

However, they expect a surge in visitors for the national holidays on September 15 and 16, although some hotel workers have stated that solidarity days have been reactivated since the end of August due to the drop in hotel occupancy, according to Sipse.

Meanwhile, José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the Caribbean Sea Tourism Cooperative, noted that union members are concerned because water activities continue to decline, as in the summer.

At the end of the holiday season, Quintana Roo reported an average hotel occupancy rate of 63.7 percent overall, with Cozumel having the lowest occupancy rate at 50.2 percent.
