A devastating car accident left seven people dead, including a family from Monterrey, Nuevo León. The accident occurred on the morning of September 16, the couple’s wedding anniversary.
According to traffic authorities and the Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office, the crash occurred on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard when the driver of a Mitsubishi pickup truck lost control, overturned, and crossed into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with another vehicle.
The victims were identified as Érika Lizeth González Garza, her husband Francisco Gabriel Simental Ochoa, both doctors, and their two children, ages 2 years and 2 months. Also killed were Jairo Emmanuel Estrella (20), Martha Elena Ochoa, and Agustín Simental (65).
According to sources close to the family, the Monterrey-based family was heading to the Cancún airport to return to Monterrey when the tragedy occurred. Three men traveling in the Mitsubishi SUV survived with serious injuries.
Civil Protection, Fire, and Traffic personnel, and paramedics treated the injured and cordoned off the area. The Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation to determine responsibility.
A Medical Couple
Érika Lizeth graduated in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL). Her husband, Francisco Gabriel, worked at the Ángeles Hospital in Mexico City and was continuing his medical specialization. The couple was celebrating their third wedding anniversary, which took place on September 16, 2022, in Monterrey.
The news has caused deep consternation in the Monterrey community, where friends and family have expressed messages of condolence on social media.
