Teléfonos de México, S.A.B. de C.V. (TELMEX) launched the TMX5 Submarine Cable, connecting Baja California Sur with the rest of the country. It uses state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a 383-kilometer fiber optic network and invested more than $25 million.

The project contributes to the region’s economic and social development by improving connectivity and the transmission of voice, data, and video. This project consolidates TELMEX’s position as a technological partner that drives important activities in the region, such as tourism, commerce, education, healthcare, and entertainment, directly benefiting residents.

The infrastructure is designed to meet the growing demand for services in the coming decades and to keep the region connected during high-impact natural events, as it provides alternate and redundant routes.

TELMEX CEO Héctor Slim Seade commented: “The start of operations of this new submarine cable consolidates our country’s telecommunications infrastructure, while addressing, through connectivity, the economic and development needs of a region as important as Baja California Sur.”

The TMX5 Submarine Cable was installed in strict compliance with current environmental regulations, with the technical and regulatory support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR), the Government of Baja California Sur, and local authorities, ensuring the protection of the marine environment.

With this effort, TELMEX consolidates its leadership, building the largest national fiber optic network with the highest quality and the most qualified team of telecommunications technicians, keeping Mexico at the forefront of technology and promoting the country’s digital development.
