Why Tulum International Airport is a failure, according to Loret de Mola: “What’s going on?”

Journalist Carlos Loret de Mola announced last Tuesday, during the broadcast of his news program on Latinus, that the Tulum Felipe Carrilo Puerto International Airport, one of the major projects built during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), has failed.

And, the journalist said, the Tulum airport is already losing flight traffic, “and it was supposed to be the good one, the bad one was AIFA, and the one that was going to be successful was Tulum,” said Loret de Mola.

Almost two years after the airport opened, the journalist claimed, several foreign airlines have reduced the number of flights by between 30 and 40%, and other airlines from Germany, the United States, and Latin America have completely stopped flying to that destination in southeastern Mexico.

“What’s going on?” the journalist asked, and showed a fragment of an explanation given by aviation specialist Carlos Torres. Torres said that the three major US airlines, Delta, United, and American, have reduced their operations. They continue to fly to Tulum Airport, but have reduced the number of flights, and others have completely stopped flying, such as Avianca and Copa.

He said there have been two major problems with that airport: the first is that there is a lack of ground transportation, meaning that when passengers want to arrive, they have no way to get there, a problem that, the specialist said, also affects Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).

Transit times between the airport and the hotel zone are the second problem with the location.

Where is Tulum International Airport located, and how much did it cost to build?

Tulum International Airport, officially Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, is located approximately 20 km southwest of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and was inaugurated on December 1, 2023, by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The airport received an investment of 3.2 billion pesos, according to Miguel Torruco Marqués, former Secretary of Tourism.

The airport received an investment

It was built on a 1,200-hectare site in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and has the capacity to serve four million people.

It is the second-largest airport in the Yucatán Peninsula, behind only Cancún Airport.

Its exact location is at kilometer 201 of Federal Highway 307, Chunyaxché ejido, in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo, and it is the closest airport to Chichén Itzá, one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico each year, by both international and Mexican tourists.
