Farmers, merchants, ranchers, veterinarians, and teachers from eight municipalities in the state’s Tierra Caliente region have joined together in the organization Calentanos por la Justicia y la Paz (Calentanos for Justice and Peace) to denounce the fact that local criminal groups have seized their farmland and communal lands.
In a letter addressed to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, the members stated that they no longer have space to plant crops or carry out agricultural activities.
They demand assistance from the authorities and that the media document their cases.
The letter from the organization reached several media outlets in the state capital, where a wave of insecurity is reported in the municipalities of Cutzamala, Ciudad Altamirano, Coyuca de Catalán, Zirándaro, San Miguel Totolapan, Tlalchapa, Ajuchitlán, and Tlapehuala.
The members point out that this land dispossession began in Cutzamala and later spread to other municipalities in the Tierra Caliente region.
They explain that criminals began invading their lands, paying supposed rents of five thousand pesos per hectare. However, they stopped paying and began issuing alleged threats to anyone who refused to give up their farmland.
They also added that the same criminal groups no longer allow farmers to keep farm animals because the same criminals are buying them at exorbitant prices.
The members of the organization urgently ask the authorities for help in this region, emphasizing, “It’s a living hell.”
