Rains cause five canals to overflow in Mazatlán, but cause less damage: Mayor

The heavy rains that occurred Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in Mazatlán caused five storm drains in the city to overflow; however, the situation did not cause significant damage, said Estrella Palacios Domínguez.

Interviewed at the end of the 22nd regular session of the City Council, the mayor reported that earlier in the day she toured some areas where the downpours had caused damage, and emphasized that, according to the National Water Commission, 45 millimeters of rain fell.

“As for the 11 storm drains that normally overflow, five of them overflowed. They have now returned to their normal water levels, but we are very attentive to any needs that arise.”

“This time there was less flooding in homes than last time, when the rainfall was higher and lasted for longer periods of time. This time there were fewer people affected inside their homes.”

He emphasized that these rains left damage in 13 neighborhoods of Mazatlán, such as Prado Bonito, Jacarandas, 20 de Noviembre, Villa Galaxia, López Mateos, and El Toreo, as well as in towns like Escamillas, where a tree fell on power lines, but that families are not without power.

In this regard, Palacios Domínguez said that they also had reports of power outages in the city, where in some areas power was restored almost immediately, although there are also some areas that remain without power, but that they have already filed reports with the CFE.

He stated that Municipal Civil Protection, during the rainy season, assisted some stranded vehicles, as well as six families who left their homes and moved to relatives’ homes, and that it was not necessary to set up any temporary shelters.

The mayor commented that Public Works crews, equipped with machinery and trucks, are already cleaning and scraping the streets flooded with water and mud, to prevent any risk to families.

Finally, she said that due to the downpours, a sinkhole opened on Santa Rosa Avenue and the Luis Donaldo Colosio Bypass, and that the perimeter has already been secured by Municipal Transit officers, while Public Works is already working to repair it.
