There are dozens of viruses around the world, some more contagious than others and all with different symptoms. However, authorities have just warned of an increase in Coxsackievirus infections in children in several states across the country. Here, we explain what the virus is and what its main symptoms are.
The Coxsackievirus, which causes hand-foot-and-mouth disease, commonly occurs in children and, although it is not fatal in most cases, it does cause significant pain and discomfort for those who suffer from it. According to Mexican authorities, an increase in infections has been reported in states such as Campeche and Oaxaca.
In Oaxaca, authorities reported at least three cases in the municipality of San Raymundo Jalpan, at a local preschool. In Campeche, in the Calkiní area, there are an estimated 23 confirmed cases, leading authorities to warn about the symptoms of the Coxsackievirus.
Coxsackievirus Symptoms and What to Do if Infected
The Coxsackievirus causes sores and painful hives on the mouth, hands, and feet. In many cases, the child may experience fever, headache, sore throat, and other general ailments, including body aches. It is transmitted through secretions, such as saliva and mucus, and through direct contact between children.
The disease is very common in preschool and elementary school children, and given the threat of contagion, authorities recommend that children constantly wash their hands, not share eating utensils, and avoid hugs. Although hand-foot-and-mouth disease is very painful, it is not widely researched in Mexico.
Health authorities have recommended that if parents identify that their child has any of the symptoms, they should immediately take them to a doctor. Although the disease clears up over time, symptoms such as fever can be fatal if not properly controlled.
