Security Available to Reach and Leave Mazatlán Airport; Authorities Seek to Increase Flight Frequency
There is security in place for passengers arriving at and departing from Mazatlán International Airport “General Rafael Buelna,” and authorities are seeking to strengthen the arrival and frequency of flights, Mazatlán Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez said.
Regarding the events that occurred the previous day, Palacios Domínguez said the situation was handled by the National Guard through the security coordination established under the Peace and Security Construction Group.
She stated that, fortunately, all flights operated normally on Sunday, while the relevant investigations are underway.
At around noon on Sunday, a suspected gunfight was reported on Federal Highway 15 Mexico-Nogales near El Castillo. Minutes later, an injured man arrived at the airport parking lot in a pickup truck seeking shelter.
National Guard personnel assisted the man, who was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Mazatlán after being found injured. As a precaution, the departure of passengers and airport employees was temporarily suspended to protect their safety.
When asked whether anyone had been arrested following the reported shooting, the mayor said that information would have to be provided by the State Attorney General’s Office and the appropriate authorities.
Palacios Domínguez emphasized that the incident did not occur inside the airport facilities and reiterated that flights continued operating normally.
She also announced a meeting with the airport’s new director following Eduardo Galindo’s promotion to another division within Grupo OMA, the airport operator that manages 13 airports in central and northern Mexico. The meeting was intended to discuss new opportunities for Mazatlán, particularly regarding airport infrastructure and flight services.
The mayor said that this year the city is placing particular emphasis on flights from Canada. A new Canadian airline is expected to begin operating in Mazatlán in December, while Canadian flights also operated during the summer, marking a new development for the destination.
Authorities want to continue strengthening arrivals, flight frequencies, and the overall passenger experience at the airport. Palacios Domínguez said coordination with airport officials would be essential and that a meeting was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. that day.
She also said that the National Guard is maintaining surveillance throughout the airport corridor and that municipal authorities had spoken with representatives from different tourism sectors, including taxi operators and hoteliers, who were informed that the airport continued operating normally.
Regarding the question of whether there is security for reaching and leaving the airport, the mayor answered affirmatively.
Osuna Zavala Returns as Municipal Trustee
After serving as provisional mayor for a little more than two months, Minerva Osuna Zavala returned on Saturday to her position as Municipal Trustee of Mazatlán City Council, Palacios Domínguez reported.
The mayor said Osuna Zavala had resumed her duties and was already working on several specific projects. Both officials remained in communication over the weekend to continue their respective agendas.
Osuna Zavala had served as provisional mayor while Palacios Domínguez participated in an internal process of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) to select its coordinator for the Fourth Transformation and National Security. Senator on leave Imelda Castro Castro was ultimately selected for that position.
Palacios Domínguez made the statements Monday after participating in the Regional Security and Peace Construction Meeting at the state government’s C4 facilities in Mazatlán.
