More than 1,000 athletes compete in the Inframundo Race in Playa del Carmen

The Municipal Sports Institute (IMD), with sponsorship from private companies, announced the Inframundo Race (Where Souls Run Free) on November 2nd, with more than a thousand local, national, and international competitors.

At a press conference at the Chevrolet dealership, the event’s main promoter, IMD director Alberto López Castro confirmed that Juan Luis Barrios Nieves, a two-time Olympic 5,000-meter finalist and multiple Pan American, Central American, and World Cup medalist, will participate in the 5- and 10-kilometer race in the youth, freestyle, masters, veterans, and inclusive categories for both men and women.

As part of the sporting event and as part of the celebrations for the faithful departed, the Olympic athlete will present his book “Sueño Olímpico” (Olympic Dream), which tells his story as the best Mexican runner of the 21st century.

Alberto López recognized Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s efforts to consolidate Playa del Carmen as an epicenter for sporting events, integrating tourism and economic activity.

In turn, Councilman Saúl Barbosa, president of the Education, Culture, and Sports Commission, thanked the participation of large companies interested in sponsoring and promoting sports.

Meanwhile, Jesús Rodríguez, director of the municipal DIF (District of Inclusion), announced that the institution will award 10 scholarships to support the participation of people with disabilities in the international competition.

During her address, Paty Fajardo, Director of Sports, announced that registration is now available with a small recovery fee.

Kits and bibs will be distributed on Saturday, November 1, at the Mario Villanueva Sports Complex, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: runner’s number, commemorative shirt, timing chip, commemorative socks, participation medal, hydration, and access to the recovery area.

All participants will receive a medal upon crossing the finish line; in addition, there will be prizes for the first three places in each category in the 5- and 10-kilometer distances.
