The Ministry of Rural Development (SEDER) reported that, in the last week, Yucatán registered 39 new cases of screwworm in 15 municipalities, bringing the total statewide to 587.

The most recent report detailed that cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, and dogs were affected, mainly by injuries caused by barbed wire, bloodsucking bat bites, and ear-ringing. The wounds were located on the ear, navel, cervical region, and vulva, in animals ranging in age from three days old to 12 years old.

The municipalities of Temax, Valladolid, Río Lagartos, Chankom, Ucú, Tzucacab, and Baca registered one case; Espita, Ticul, Mérida, Calotmul, Izamal, and Temozón registered two; Panabá reported 5, and Tizimín, 15.

Given this situation, the Department of Agriculture (SEDER), in coordination with the National Service of Health, Safety, and Agrifood Quality (Senasica), is maintaining control and prevention measures. These include free treatment for infected animals, training for producers, and specialized personnel to treat wounds and provide health monitoring.

We are working together with Local Livestock Associations (AGL) and city councils to ensure timely reporting and a rapid response.
