A video has begun circulating on social media showing a Tulum police officer threatening to arrest a pair of young men who were apparently just walking down the street.
According to various media outlets citing the organization “Observatorio Ciudadano de Tulum,” the couple was harassed and stalked for no apparent reason, prompting the woman to take out her phone to report the situation.
In the recording, which lasts less than a minute, the police officer can be heard saying he will arrest the two.
“I’m going to take both of them, just like that,” the officer stated. When asked about the reason for the arrest, the officer indicated that the man had insulted him.
Later, there is a cut in the clip circulating on platforms like Facebook, and the officer can finally be seen snatching the cell phone from the young woman who was recording.
The young men were allegedly arrested after the confrontation with the officer and are now presenting their statements to the Public Ministry.
Likewise, the Tulum Citizen Observatory revealed that one of its collaborators was also arrested; they were heading to police headquarters to request his release.
“Last night, the Tulum Police once again attacked citizens, unjustifiably arresting one of our esteemed collaborators of this Citizen Observatory. We are currently addressing Police Headquarters to demand his immediate release,” they wrote on their Facebook account.
It should be noted that this is not the only case of police abuse reported in Tulum. In recent hours, extortion of some American tourists has also been reported.
Apparently, they arrived at a checkpoint located on the extension of Kukulkán Avenue, near the coastal area of Tulum, where officers allegedly demanded a payment of $1,100 (approximately 20,000 Mexican pesos) for not presenting a physical driver’s license. The visitors had shown their digital ID.

Faced with the threat of arrest, the tourists agreed to pay the “fine,” which was collected through a bank terminal owned by Clip, identified by the acronym SSC-Tulum (Tulum Citizen Security Secretariat), which charged two cards, one for $273.75 and the other for $820.75.
