Fermín Damián Adame, a meteorologist with the state’s Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat, reported that a cyclone is forecast to form this weekend, bringing rain from Saturday through Tuesday to the municipalities of Acapulco, San Marcos, and Coyuca de Benítez.
In an interview with Quadratín Guerrero, the expert explained that in the worst-case scenario, the storm would be located 100 kilometers from the coast and would leave an accumulated 60 millimeters of rain in a single day, equivalent to what typically falls in two days this season.
The specialist stated that although the forecasts improved from one day to the next, it is not yet possible to give a conclusive prediction.
He pointed out that the combination of atmospheric and oceanic factors that influence the development of a cyclonic system remain favorable for the storm to strengthen.
He mentioned that these factors include high sea surface temperatures ranging from 30 to 31 degrees off the coast of Guerrero, temperatures of 29 to 30 degrees at 25 meters deep, and atmospheric pressure conditions at medium and high levels.
“The cyclone trajectories, considering European, German, and American models, are inconclusive. All the models are scattered, so we need to continue updating the information,” he explained.
He added that the probability of cyclone development in the Pacific Ocean is greater than 60 percent and less than 76 percent, although he insisted that it is still too early to have a completely accurate forecast.
The meteorologist recalled that during Hurricane John in 2024, 1,200 millimeters of rain fell in just one week, the equivalent of an entire year’s worth of rain, which left damage in Acapulco.
He urged the public to make advance decisions to protect their lives and avoid damage to their property.
He recommended developing a family civil protection plan, preparing an emergency backpack, and locating available temporary shelters.
“Our ultimate goal is people’s lives. This information is not meant to scare people, but to prevent,” he emphasized.
