The Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) reported that five people were lynched and burned to death by residents of the community of Santa María Texcatitlán in the Sierra de Flores Magón. The incident occurred after neighbors reported an attempted robbery.

According to initial reports, the five individuals accused of attempting to break into Felipa H.H.’s home were traveling in a white van and attempted to escape, but were caught by the locals.

As a result, the victims later reported missing are: Juana P.T., Martín G.L., Miguel Alberto M.G., Santiago M.M.C.B., and José Benjamín H.R.

In response to this situation, authorities confirmed that a joint operation was carried out last Tuesday by the FGEO, the State Investigation Agency (AEI), the National Guard, and the State Police to respond to the report of the disappearance of a man accompanied by four other people.

As a result of these actions, “human remains were found in the Llano Amarillo area of Santa María Texcatitlán,” the Prosecutor’s Office detailed in a statement shared on social media.

Following the events, it was announced that forensic specialists are already working in the area to clarify the circumstances of the victims’ deaths. “Preliminary evidence has been provided that the perpetrators set the bodies on fire,” the state agency stated.

It was also reported that to further identify the victims, the remains will undergo various genetic tests.

“The remains will undergo DNA analysis, based on biological samples, to obtain a genetic profile that will allow the victims to be identified and determine if they match the individuals reported missing,” they reported.

The initial investigations have allowed the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office to gather evidence that points to various hypotheses regarding the motive for the crime. Among them, there are active agrarian conflicts in the area, as well as reports of illicit activities, and a probable origin in cases of improper collections, also known as “drop by drop” collections.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues under the leadership of the Deputy Attorney General’s Office for Regional Control, with the goal of clarifying the events and locating those responsible. “The Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office is advancing the ministerial investigations through the Deputy Attorney General’s Office for Regional Control to determine how the events occurred and identify those responsible,” the office concluded.
