The researcher from the Institute of Geophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) gave a specialized talk this morning on the topic of earthquakes, due to the increase in these types of events in the municipality of Los Cabos this year.
The doctor revealed that more than 1,500 earthquakes have been recorded in the municipality of Los Cabos from January to August of this year.
“Most of these earthquakes are imperceptible to humans, but through the installed seismometers that feed the national seismological database, they can be recorded and their magnitudes can be seen with a preliminary type. The idea is to understand how they behave, how many occur, and the largest magnitudes they have in order to establish criteria.”
He reiterated that this activity stems from an earthquake swarm, the length of which is still unknown.
The specialist also acknowledged that the earthquakes that occurred in the municipality of Los Cabos have been more noticeable due to the soil conditions in the district, and even, compared to earthquakes in Mexico City, the sensation of shaking has been stronger.
“Earthquakes shake our terrain and our consciences. They invite us to recognize that among the wonders of this place, it’s a kind of tax for being here that nature exacts from us. Knowing how to live with earthquakes, knowing protocol measures, if they are major earthquakes that happened to us, speaks well of what has been done in the construction sector and the reaction of the population.”
The doctor considered that this seismic activity has served to raise awareness among authorities and citizens.
