A group of pilgrims from the Francisco I. Madero neighborhood in the municipality of Chilchotla, Puebla, suffered a road accident early Friday morning on the Mexico-Veracruz highway near the community of Cuauhtémoc in Huamantla, Tlaxcala. The death toll was one and eight were injured.
This journey of faith has turned into a tragic moment for this municipality in Puebla, located 109 kilometers east-centrally of the capital, and bordering Quimixtlán, Guadalupe Victoria, Lafragua, and Chichiquila, among others.
According to initial reports, around 5:00 a.m. this Friday, October 3, a semi-trailer with a dry van rear-ended the torton-type truck in which the Puebla pilgrims were traveling after visiting the Lord of Chalma in the State of Mexico.
After the impact, the vehicle was dragged for several meters, instantly killing a man, whose body was left lying on the asphalt.
Paramedics from Huamantla, Ixtenco, and Xaloztoc, along with the Red Cross and state rescue teams, arrived at the scene and provided medical attention to the injured pilgrims. Those with serious medical conditions were transported to the IMSS Bienestar General Hospital in Huamantla.
The driver of the trailer was detained at the scene by members of the National Guard, while responsibility for the tragic accident that occurred this morning in the state of Tlaxcala is being determined, according to El Sol de Tlaxcala.
The accident caused the complete closure of the highway toward Huamantla for more than two hours and a heavy traffic jam. It was around 7:50 a.m. when authorities partially opened a lane to resume traffic.
The site was placed under the protection of the Ministry of Citizen Security and the National Guard, while personnel from the Tlaxcala Prosecutor’s Office and the Institute of Forensic Sciences removed the body and began investigations.
