Mérida’s cemeteries are undergoing a comprehensive cleaning in preparation for the commemoration of Hanal Pixán, or Day of the Dead, which takes place in late October and early November.
Luis Jorge Montalvo Duarte, Director of Public Services for the Mérida City Council, notes that they normally have crews pruning the cemeteries every day, but in this month leading up to Hanal Pixán, more comprehensive work is being done: painting walls, pruning trees, checking for missing lighting, making sure no cable has been stolen, and repairing malfunctions.
Mérida Cemeteries Prepare for Hanal Pixán. Regarding visiting hours, the director specified that access will remain open from seven in the morning to six in the evening.
“The public visit itself ends at 6 p.m. However, the cemetery remains open for questions about whether a viewing room is required, and for arrangements made by family members when someone dies. The service is provided 365 days a year,” he explained.
On the other hand, Montalvo Duarte mentioned that the City Council maintains an annual program to build new vaults at the Xoclán cemetery.
“We have a construction program with the Department of Public Works, and each year, 100, 150, 200 new vaults are being built, depending on the needs, so there is space, and many vaults are also being restored,” he noted.
