Puerto Vallarta is immersed in disaster after yesterday’s strong storm left many residents with material damage and one death.

A man died after being swept away by the current in his vehicle during the storm that hit Puerto Vallarta early Sunday morning. Flooding also reported damage to more than 700 homes and 85 businesses in various locations.

The Jalisco State Civil Protection and Fire Department (UEPCBJ) reported that the most impacted neighborhoods are Parque Las Palmas, Mojoneras, Portales, Bobadilla, and La Floresta. In the latter, the rising waters of the stream that crosses 16 de Septiembre Avenue swept away a vehicle, trapping its driver, who drowned.

Civil Protection personnel and various agencies are working on relief efforts, cleanup, and damage assessments.

“So far, 703 homes, 85 businesses, and two schools have been affected, and the operation has the support of various agencies. In addition, I ordered the Blackhawk helicopter to this municipality to strengthen the rescue efforts,” stated the state governor, Pablo Lemus.

In Nayarit, the rainfall caused flooding in various communities in Bahía de Banderas, San Blas, Compostela, and Amatlán de Cañas, where damage assessments have not yet been made, but only material losses have been reported.

One of the hardest hit communities was Jocotán, in San Blas, where dozens of families had to move to a shelter because their homes were underwater.

The state governor, Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, toured some of the affected areas and reported that household goods and food supplies will be sent to the affected families through the Nayarit DIF (Nayarit Department of Family Planning).
