Nationwide, 4,915 people have tested positive for measles so far, of which 22 have died, and only 80 cases remain active. This, according to Miguel Ángel Lezana, Director General of Epidemiology for the Government of Mexico, who applauded the strategies implemented by the Durango government to mitigate the disease. Despite being surrounded by states like Chihuahua, only 40 cases and one death have been reported.

“Durango is setting a clear example of how things should be done; this doesn’t mean that others aren’t doing things well, but what the Secretary of Health and his team have done is remarkable,” he stated.

Ángel Lezana announced that, as a result, the decision was made to hold an in-person and virtual meeting with all entities to find a way to end the measles outbreak in Mexico.

The federal official explained that health authorities in Durango will be sharing their experience with other states for three days. “Today, we are working to stop this transmission, and we have a national target date for this, which is next November, so that Mexico can maintain the elimination of endemic measles,” he stated.

Miguel Ángel Lezana admitted that vaccination coverage has dropped by between 60 and 70%, which has led to the increase in measles cases. For this reason, the physician encouraged citizens to get vaccinated to prevent infection as much as possible.

Getting vaccinated is an act of love, as a person is not only protecting themselves, but also those around them, such as their friends, neighbors, and above all, their family. They are not only protecting themselves against measles, but also against rubella and mumps. Miguel Ángel Lezana
Regarding the availability of the vaccine nationwide, the Director General of Epidemiology stated that they have the necessary doses to meet any demand that may arise.
