The National Meteorological Service (SMN), a subsidiary of the National Water Commission (Conagua), reported that intense rainfall of between 75 and 150 millimeters is expected this Thursday in Oaxaca (Southern Sierra, Coast, and Isthmus regions) and Chiapas (Border, Sierra, and Soconusco regions), resulting from a combination of atmospheric systems affecting different regions of the country.
Cold front number 7 remains stationary over the north of the country, where it interacts with a trough in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere and with the subtropical jet stream. This phenomenon will cause a drop in temperature, gusty winds, and heavy rains in northern and northwestern states, including Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango.
On the other hand, the entry of moisture from the Caribbean Sea and the slow movement of tropical wave number 38 will cause very heavy rains in Quintana Roo and Yucatán, and heavy rains in Campeche. In addition, a low-pressure channel over the Sierra Madre Oriental, combined with humid airflow from the Pacific and the Caribbean, will generate rainfall in Tabasco and Veracruz, as well as showers in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
The agency also noted the presence of a low-pressure area with cyclonic potential off the coast of Mexico’s southern Pacific, which will maintain the likelihood of heavy rains in Chiapas and Oaxaca, as well as high waves along their coastlines.
In the western part of the country, the entry of humid air from the Pacific and unstable atmospheric conditions will lead to very heavy rains in Nayarit and Jalisco, heavy rains in Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero, and occasional showers in Puebla, Morelos, and the State of Mexico. Light rains are also forecast in Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Zacatecas.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned that heavy rains could reduce visibility and cause river and stream swells, puddles, landslides, and flooding, and urged the public to heed civil protection advisories.
Wind gusts of between 60 and 75 km/h are also expected on the coasts of Oaxaca and Chiapas, which could cause trees or billboards to fall, as well as high waves of up to 2.5 meters on the South Pacific coast.
Regarding temperatures, the forecast indicates lows of -5 to 0°C with possible frost in the mountains of Baja California, Sonora, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and the State of Mexico; while in high areas of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Veracruz, Jalisco, and Colima, lows will range between 0 and 5°C.
In contrast, high temperatures of 35 to 40°C are expected in regions of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Oaxaca, and Yucatán, and 30 to 35°C in Sonora, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Chiapas, Tabasco, and Quintana Roo, among other states.
Finally, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) indicated that waves could reach between 2.5 and 3.5 meters in height off the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and between 1.5 and 2.5 meters off the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.
According to weather reports, high temperatures are expected to reach 25°C during the afternoon, so pleasant, sunny weather is expected for outdoor activities.
However, low nighttime temperatures will persist. The overnight low will remain at 12°C, generating a cold atmosphere again at the beginning and end of the day.
Regarding precipitation, the probability remains low, with a 15% chance of scattered rain both during the day and at night. The population is advised to take precautions due to sudden temperature changes between morning and afternoon.
Conagua urged the population to follow the recommendations of state and municipal authorities in light of the adverse weather conditions that could continue over the next few days.
