The ghost clowns in Yucatán

Although there are fondly remembered clowns in Yucatán, such as the popular Pepillín, there are also stories that send shivers down your spine. Among them is that of the ghost clown of Ticul, a tale that over the years has become one of the most haunting legends in the southern part of the state.

According to legend, several decades ago a circus came to a town on the peninsula, possibly Ticul. Among the performers was a clown much loved by the public, who sadly died tragically during or shortly after one of the performances.
Instead of returning his body to his family, it was buried in the town cemetery, and from then on, rumors began to circulate: neighbors claimed to see the figure of a clown walking among the graves or prowling around the cemetery when night fell.

Witnesses claimed that this clown had a sad look, a frozen smile, and a presence so lifelike that more than one person fled in terror, believing they were seeing a ghost.

The story gained traction thanks to paranormal researcher Jorge Moreno, who documented the case and shared it on his social media in 2020, reawakening interest in this chilling Yucatecan legend.

In 2016, another disturbing case shook the people of Mérida. Residents of Unidad Morelos, west of Mérida, reported the appearance of a clown wandering the streets at midnight, watching passersby and frightening them.
The situation caused such alarm that even the authorities received reports about this mysterious figure. Although its origin was never proven, the case coincided with the global phenomenon that year, when people dressed as terrifying clowns appeared in public places in several countries to cause fear.

Today, the stories of the ghost clown of Ticul and the sinister clown of Unidad Morelos are part of Yucatán’s popular imagination, reminding us that even behind painted smiles a terrifying mystery can hide.
