In addition to the affection of their fans and decades of support, Depeche Mode is linked to Mexico by its cult of death.
“Memento Mori” is the name of the English band’s latest album and also of their tour at the then-Foro Sol, a relationship and a concert captured in the documentary “Depeche Mode: M.”
Directed by Mexican Fernando Frías (“I’m No Longer Here”), the documentary arrives in theaters across the country on October 28th as a musical journey through the band’s rhythm, intertwined with the cult of death in Mexico.
The band, led by Martin Gore and David Gahan, performed three dates in Mexico City: September 21, 23, and 25, 2023. However, the final cut includes excerpts from each, mixed with a setlist that reviews their greatest hits.
Taking the phrase “Memento Mori” as a reference, which gives the album and tour its title and means “remember that you will die,” the director developed the concept for the documentary.
The energy displayed by the audience from the dance floor to the stands was captured by Fernando Frías, who also included portraits of fans outside the Iztacalco City Hall.
“Enjoy the Silence,” “Personal Jesus,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Never Let Me Down Again,” “Ghosts Again,” and “Walking in My Shoes” are some of the songs featured in the 99-minute feature film, which also includes scenes depicting everyday life in the capital.
The recording was made a few months after the death of Andy Fletcher “Fletch,” and the narrative of the material serves as a tribute to the band’s founder, showing concertgoers holding up images of the keyboardist’s face.
In addition to the film, Depeche Mode will release the album “Memento Mori: Mexico City” on December 5, 2025, which will include 28 songs and bonus features such as “Survive,” “Life 2.0,” “Give Yourself to Me,” and “In the End.”
Both albums will be available on CD and vinyl (4 LPs) for audio and DVD and Blu-ray for audiovisual formats.
