Seven men were arrested by federal and Armed Forces authorities while traveling in a vehicle with U.S. license plates in possession of weapons in Tijuana, Baja California.

The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported that the arrest of the men took place during reconnaissance and surveillance patrols in the municipality, when they observed a pickup truck with California license plates.

Five men were inside the vehicle, and two were on foot. After being stopped, they adopted an evasive attitude. In response, security officers proceeded to conduct an inspection to prevent the commission of any crimes.

During the operation, five long weapons for the exclusive use of the Mexican Army and the Armed Forces, as well as two handguns, were located, and the seven men were arrested.

The men were informed of their legal rights and, along with the seized items, were handed over to the corresponding Public Prosecutor’s Office agent to determine their legal status.

Members of the Ministry of National Defense (Defense) and the National Guard (GN) located more than a ton of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and opium gum hidden in a shipment of chili peppers being transported from Sinaloa and destined for the municipality of Mexicali, Baja California.

According to the Defense Ministry, the seizure was carried out following an inspection of a tractor-trailer belonging to the company “Transportes Refrigerados del Norte” at the “Cucapah” Military Security Post, located in the municipality of San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.

The operation took place around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24, after an inspection using technological equipment detected inconsistencies in the boxes of chili peppers, prompting a manual inspection.

During the operation, soldiers found 235 packages containing five kilos of methamphetamine each, two bags of fentanyl weighing two kilos each, and five packages of opium gum weighing one kilogram each.

The final seizure resulted in 1,175 kilograms of methamphetamine, four kilos of fentanyl, and five kilos of opium gum.

In addition, the 27-year-old driver, originally from Mexicali, Baja California, was arrested and handed over to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with the vehicle and the seized drugs.
