Pet crematorium in Quintana Roo under investigation after discovery of dog carcasses that were never cremated

More than 50 citizen complaints alerted authorities to a possible scam, as the animals had supposedly been cremated, but their remains did not match what the owners received.

The secured property is located on Primo de Verdad Avenue, between Universidad and Boulevard, where citizens recognized their pets in a state of decomposition.

The crematorium involved was located on Retorno Isla Contoy, between Héroes de Chapultepec and Guadalupe Victoria, and offered services that included a cremation certificate, biodegradable urn, bio-ashes, keepsakes, home delivery, and psychological support for the owners.

How did the pet crematorium fraud work in Quintana Roo?

According to information released by the Attorney General’s Office, the victims paid the pet crematorium between 1,500 and 2,500 pesos for complete packages, which also promised veterinary consultations, grief counseling, surgeries, and even chemotherapy for pets. However, initial investigations revealed that the urns delivered contained only soil, while the pets remained on the premises uncremated.

Furthermore, it was confirmed that the establishment lacked both an operating license and municipal permits to operate as an animal crematorium, which is why it was seized by the authorities. The Prosecutor’s Office is continuing its investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for these illegal activities.

Animal rights organizations and advocates expressed their concern on social media regarding the case, emphasizing the urgent need to regulate and oversee pet cremation services, as well as the importance of reporting irregularities to protect animals and the owners who rely on these services.
