The Festival of Lights begins in Campeche

The Campeche City Hall kicked off the 2025 Festival of Lights with the lighting ceremony and the Pibipollo Bazaar, a series of commemorative events through which the municipal government—headed by Biby Rabelo—adds tourism products, fosters and promotes local traditions, boosts the economy, and creates spaces for families to gather.

The municipal government is responding to citizen demand with the Festival of Lights, which began on Wednesday with the Pibipollo Bazaar, a space in the Román Piña Chan Passage where 32 entrepreneurs are participating, offering products for altar making, chocolate, pibipollos, snacks, traditional sweets, and more.

Later, in Independence Square, known as the main park, Mayor Biby Rabelo, accompanied by representatives from a well-known soft drink company and Gesti+, turned on the lights of a symbolic altar, with which the city government joins in and showcases Campeche’s Day of the Dead traditions.

There, an arts festival was held featuring the Municipal Dance Company and the Quetzalcóatl Independent Dance Company.

The event concluded with a performance by the Campeche Municipal Chamber Orchestra, featuring a musical repertoire based on a Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale. Approximately 12 musicians played string and wind instruments under the direction of Maestro Gabriel Tamay Carrillo.

The Festival of Lights was created by the Campeche City Hall four years ago with the aim of generating comprehensive benefits: responding to the citizens’ demand for artistic, cultural, and tourist activities during these festivities; boosting the city’s economy through preparations and the influx of visitors the event generates; and providing a space for families to come, enjoy themselves, and spend time together.

The celebrations continue this Friday with the Parade of Lights, a competition and demonstration route starting at 7:00 p.m. The parade will begin at IV Centenario Park (also known as San Martín Park), proceed along 10th Street in the city center, reach the Baluartes circuit, turn onto 61st Street, and end at City Hall, where the Tornado Group will perform music for dancing.
