The media outlet Producciones Telemar published a letter issued by the Campeche State Attorney General’s Office (FGECAM) requesting the names of the journalists who wrote articles about Governor Layda Sansores, in order to compile an investigation for the crime of “slander and the resulting damage.”
Experts believe this order is a form of pressure to control and censor the local media outlet that has published information critical of the current state government, similar to what happened with Tribuna de Campeche.
Letter number 040/2025, issued on October 14, gives Producciones Telamar a period of five business days to provide the names of the journalists who wrote 59 news articles published between January 5, 2025, and last September 16. The name of the staff who authorized their publication is also requested.
The letter includes the headlines of each of the requested articles, all of which have titles critical of Layda Sansores’ administration and her actions as governor of Campeche.
The Prosecutor’s Office’s request is based on the National Code of Criminal Procedure, which requires every person or public servant to provide information requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in order to compile an investigation file, in this case, for the crime of slander.
“The FGECAM’s action reinforces the perception that government agencies seek to limit freedom of expression and stifle journalistic coverage that questions public administration in the state, creating an environment of self-censorship among local media,” Telamar Productions posted on social media.
If Producciones Telemar fails to provide the requested information, it could face legal proceedings for disobedience of authority, in addition to a fine of 50 UMAs, equivalent to 5,657 pesos in 2025.
