The Ex Hacienda de Chautla, a tourist site in Puebla, welcomed over 100,000 visitors during the Day of the Dead season and the Catrinerías Festival.
In this iconic location, the 2025 Catrinas Contest was held on Saturday afternoon, with over 60 local artists participating.
A Puebla-based company has captured the essence of the festivities in a beverage that celebrates both tradition and innovation.
Wearing outfits inspired by the iconic figure of Guadalupe Posada, the participants showcased their creativity and talent by incorporating makeup with elements alluding to life and death.
Along the runway, catrines and catrinas displayed costumes made from recycled materials, ribbons, fabrics, sequins, corn husks, paper, wire, cardboard, lights, and the characteristic marigold flower, fusing tradition and mysticism.
Michelle Talavera, executive director of Puebla Parks and Conventions, highlighted that this initiative contributes to promoting traditions and has positioned Puebla as a cultural destination within the framework of the Day of the Dead celebrations.
She noted that the first edition of Catrinerías will close with a record number of visitors, having exceeded initial expectations threefold and contributing to the region’s economic recovery.
“We’ve had more than 100,000 visitors and we’ll surely close with more than 150,000 and an economic impact of more than 40 million pesos. The Catrina and Catrine contest is a showcase of the creativity, with high-quality costumes, work, and talent of the people of Puebla.”
She emphasized that Catrinerías sets a positive precedent in cultural tourism with innovative experiences for visitors.
“We’ve never seen the number of tourists we’ve attracted with this event. More than 100,000 people in just 15 days is a number that took four months to reach under previous administrations.”
