Puebla designs a new Risk Atlas “tailored” to its geographic needs, with updated digital tools
The Puebla State Government is working on updating the state Risk Atlas, an essential tool for natural disaster prevention, which will be “tailor-made” for the state’s geographic and climatic conditions, reported Cabinet Coordinator José Luis García Parra.
Currently, only 38 of the 217 municipalities have their updated Risk Atlas, despite its importance in identifying areas vulnerable to earthquakes, floods, or volcanic eruptions.
García Parra explained that the state government has already begun modernizing the Atlas’s digital platform, which will include new technical studies, geographic licenses, and specialized training for the personnel responsible for its operation. However, he acknowledged that the total investment required for the project is still unknown.
Despite the lack of updates in most municipalities, the official ruled out sanctions for municipalities that do not have a current Atlas. However, he reiterated the state Ministry of the Interior’s call to local governments to update their documents and strengthen prevention measures against natural phenomena.
