Sonora is in mourning after the tragic explosion at a Waldo’s store in downtown Hermosillo, which claimed the lives of 23 people—including minors—and left at least 12 injured. As a sign of respect and solidarity with the victims, the State Government announced the cancellation of all cultural and tourist events scheduled for this Day of the Dead celebration.
The disaster occurred Saturday afternoon, around 3:00 p.m., at the intersection of Doctor Noriega and Matamoros streets, in the heart of the Sonoran capital. Images from the scene showed a devastating scene: collapsed structures, damaged vehicles, and an intense mobilization of rescue teams who worked for hours among the rubble.
In an official statement, the Government of Sonora expressed its “deepest condolences and support to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.” Furthermore, he reiterated that the suspension of public activities is a sign of respect given the magnitude of the tragedy that has shocked the entire state.
“In light of the tragic accident that occurred today (Saturday, November 1st) in downtown Hermosillo, we express our deepest condolences and support to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
Out of respect and as a sign of mourning, the State Government has decided to cancel all cultural and tourist events scheduled for tomorrow (November 2nd),” the statement reads.
The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) reported that six people remain hospitalized, including a patient who was readmitted to the Sonora State Children’s Hospital (HIES) after being discharged from IMSS Clinic 37. The other victims are distributed among various clinics, such as the Northwest Clinic, the ISSSTE Ocaranza Clinic, and IMSS General Hospitals 14 and 2.
According to an intensive care physician at the Northwest Clinic, the two patients hospitalized in that unit remain stable and will not require transfer to another facility. Meanwhile, authorities continue to gather information to determine the precise cause of the explosion.
Initial lines of investigation point to a possible accident involving a transformer located inside the commercial establishment. However, forensic experts have not yet been able to fully access the site, as the Fire Department continues debris removal and structural assessment.
Once the site is safe, specialists will review the evidence and materials collected to confirm whether the electrical failure was indeed the cause of the incident. Until then, authorities have asked the public to avoid speculation and remain attentive to official information.
The tragedy in Hermosillo has left a deep mark on the Sonoran community. Streets that should have been filled with color and offerings this weekend are now empty, as a sign of respect and mourning for the victims of the tragic November 1st.
