If you think your electricity bill is too high, you should check if the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has applied the High Consumption Domestic Tariff (DAC). If it is active, we’ll tell you the most common mistakes that led to it.
The CFE explains that the DAC Tariff is applied when the user’s average monthly consumption exceeds the high consumption limit. How do you know if your tariff has changed? It’s easy; just check the top of your bill.
According to the specialized website Home Pro, several factors can cause your electricity bill to be high. It’s important to review each point to identify the mistake you’re making that may have placed you on the DAC Tariff.
Excessive use of air conditioners or heaters
Leaving lights and electronic devices on when not in use
Using incandescent or halogen light bulbs
Leaving the refrigerator door open for extended periods or constantly opening and closing it
How can I get off the DAC tariff?
The Institute of Legal Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) explains that there is no specific legal procedure for getting off the DAC tariff. However, “the first thing you need to do is reduce your consumption to the levels of the domestic tariff that corresponds to your situation.”
“There is also the option of filing a complaint for excessive charges on your electricity consumption. This complaint process is free of charge and can be filed in person at any of the Federal Electricity Commission’s Customer Service Centers or online,” the Institute adds.
Filing a complaint is very easy. You can do so through the official CFE website, the 071 call center, or at any customer service center. If your complaint is valid, your bill will be corrected. Otherwise, you will be asked to make the corresponding payment.
