Cuban-American Congressman Carlos A. Giménez has called for specific measures to address this situation, highlighting potential economic and security implications for the United States.
The Mexican government’s support for the communist regime in Cuba should be a key factor to consider in the renegotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Congressman Giménez stated on Tuesday.
The agreement, known in Spanish as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), is a free trade agreement that entered into force on July 1, 2020, replacing the former North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee and the U.S.-Mexico Interparliamentary Group, I have formally denounced the Mexican government for its pathetic complicity with the murderous dictatorship in Cuba,” the legislator wrote, posting a letter on social media addressed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding this matter.
Giménez calls for the review of this trilateral agreement to guarantee U.S. economic and national security interests and proposes including three key provisions:
Giménez cites recent reports indicating that Mexico has increased its oil shipments to Cuba, which could undermine U.S. policy and potentially violate sanctions.
In this regard, he notes that this action is especially concerning given Pemex’s financial situation and the Cuban government’s alleged connections to criminal organizations.
“I have concerns about Mexico’s possible collusion with cartels in facilitating illegal immigration to the United States. Such actions could have devastating consequences for the safety of American citizens,” the congressman stated.
