A man was arrested after residents of Region 237 in Cancún, Quintana Roo, reported an alleged case of sexual abuse against a female dog inside a sports field.
The assault occurred in the bleachers of the public area and was captured in images that circulated on social media. The incident sparked immediate outrage.
According to animal protection organizations, the citizen report led to the aggressor’s location.
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported that the arrest was led by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Environmental Crimes, Wildlife, and Urban Development. Personnel from this agency rescued the animal and placed it under the care of the Environmental Protection Agency for its treatment and follow-up.
Members of the civil association ‘Cachorrilandia’ reported that specialized personnel, including a veterinarian, participated in the rescue.
What are the penalties for animal abuse in Quintana Roo?
The execution of sentences and investigations no longer depend on the filing of a criminal complaint, thanks to a substantial reform in 2023.
Previously, the Public Prosecutor’s Office needed a complaint from the victim to investigate and prosecute the crime, which meant that many cases of animal abuse went unpunished, and investigative police were unable to conduct inquiries.
The reform also includes modifications to the Animal Protection and Welfare Law, imposing fines of up to 400 times the daily value of the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA), equivalent to approximately 41,400 pesos, for those who mistreat animals.
